Coton de Tuléar Size and Weight: Breed Standard, Growth Timeline and How to Check Healthy Weight

"How big will it get?" is usually the first question families ask. The adult Coton de Tuléar size is set by the breed standard, but individuals vary, and the fluffy coat makes the dog look bigger than it is. This guide covers the standard, the growth timeline and how to check healthy weight.

In shortUnder the FCI standard, males are 26–28 cm at the withers and females 23–25 cm, with males weighing about 4–6 kg and females 3.5–5 kg. Height growth mostly finishes at 9–12 months, body shape at 12–18 months and the adult coat around 2 years. Because the coat makes the dog look larger, check weight by feeling the ribs and waist.

Coton de Tuléar size: the breed standard

SexHeight at withersWeight
Male26–28 cm (about +2 cm / −1 cm tolerated)About 4–6 kg
Female23–25 cm (about +2 cm / −1 cm tolerated)About 3.5–5 kg

Height is measured from the floor to the top of the shoulder blades. The body is slightly longer than tall, and the tail curls over the back when moving. Other kennel clubs give slightly different figures, but not by much.

Growth timeline

AgeStage
2–3 monthsGoes home; rapid growth begins
3–6 monthsFastest growth in height and length; teething
6–9 monthsClose to adult height
9–12 monthsHeight growth mostly done
12–18 monthsMuscle and body shape mature; switch to adult food
18–24 monthsAdult coat complete

The parents' height and weight are the best predictor of your puppy's adult size, so ask the breeder.

Compared with other small breeds

Coton de Tuléar23–28 cm3.5–6 kgSlightly longer than tall
Maltese20–25 cm3–4 kgSmall and dainty
Bichon Frise25–29 cmAround 5 kgRound silhouette from curly coat

Slightly larger and sturdier than a Maltese, similar to or a little smaller than a Bichon. A comfortable size for apartment living.

Checking weight under the coat

Body conditionRibsWaist from above
Too thinEasily felt and visibleVery tucked
IdealLightly covered, easy to feelSlight waist
OverweightHard to feel under fatAlmost straight

For a small dog, 1 kg is close to 20% of body weight. Extra weight strains the knees and back, so weigh your dog at the same time each month and write it down.

How much to feed

Veterinary nutrition uses a simple formula: resting energy requirement (RER) = 70 × body weight (kg) to the power of 0.75. A 5 kg dog needs about 234 kcal at rest; a neutered adult usually starts at about 1.6 × RER, around 370 kcal a day. Divide by the calories per 100 g on the food label to get the daily amount, then adjust by 10% every 2–4 weeks based on weight. Keep treats under 10% of daily calories.

Can you predict adult size from a puppy?

Not exactly from a puppy's weight alone, but the parents' size and the adult size of earlier litters give a good range. Littermates can differ, so think in ranges. At Baebaepuppy we give an estimate based on the parents and recommend weighing monthly after adoption.

Protect growing joints

  • Use steps or a ramp instead of jumping off sofas and beds
  • Limit stairs and walking on hind legs
  • Put mats on slippery floors (one adopting family covered every floor in their home)
  • Feed growth food as recommended; do not add calcium supplements without your vet
  • When lifting, support the hindquarters, not just the front legs

A sample weight-loss plan

If a neutered adult has gained a little, aim to lose about 1% of body weight per week.

StepExample (5.8 kg → target 5.2 kg)
1Keep treats under 10% of calories; weigh food precisely
2Weigh after 2 weeks; if no change, reduce food by 10%
3Add 10 minutes of walking and some sniffing games
4Keep the same habits once you reach the target

Rapid weight gain or loss needs a vet visit before any diet; thyroid disease is one possible cause.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dog above the standard unhealthy?

No. A little over or under is fine if the dog is well proportioned and active. Sudden changes in weight should be checked by a vet.

Will neutering make my dog gain weight?

Metabolism drops and appetite rises after neutering, so reduce food slightly and weigh more often.
