Does the Coton de Tuléar Shed? Shedding, Allergies and What Allergy-Prone Families Should Know
It is true that Coton de Tuléar shedding is low. But "does not shed much" and "will not trigger allergies" are two different things, so allergy-prone families should check both. This guide explains why the coat sheds so little, what you need to manage instead, and what to do first if someone in your home has allergies.

Why Coton de Tuléar shedding is so low
Many breeds have a double coat and drop their undercoat each season, which is why Pomeranians, Corgis and Shibas shed so heavily. The Coton has a fine, continuously growing coat without that seasonal blow. Hair that naturally falls out tends to stay caught in the coat rather than land on the floor.
So your floors and clothes stay noticeably cleaner, but loose hair twists into tangles, and brushing them out becomes the core of coat care. See our grooming guide.
When shedding increases
| Time | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 8–14 months | Puppy coat changes to adult coat; shedding and tangles jump | Brush daily or trim short |
| After a bath | Brushing releases loose hair all at once | Normal; brush while drying |
| Stress or illness | Hair loss in patches or red skin | See a vet |
A handful of hair in the brush during the coat change is normal. Round bald patches, itching or red skin are not, and need a vet.
What families tell us
One of the most common things new owners say is "There is hardly any hair on the floor." Almost as common: "I skipped brushing for a few days and it matted behind the ears." Families who know from day one that low shedding comes with tangle management have a much easier time.
You may read that the Coton is "the breed that sheds least of all" or "never smells like a dog." Shedding and odor vary by individual and by care. A coat left damp after a bath or ears that are not cleaned can smell in any breed, so it helps to set realistic expectations.
Shedding and allergies are separate questions
The main allergens are proteins found in saliva, skin flakes (dander) and urine. Hair carries them around. A low-shedding dog may spread less allergen through your home and cause milder symptoms, but every dog produces these proteins. "Hypoallergenic" is a marketing word, not a guarantee, and individual dogs differ.
If someone in your family has allergies
- Get tested to find out what you react to (dogs, dust mites and so on)
- Spend at least one or two hours with a Coton, then repeat on another day
- If symptoms can be severe, talk to the treating doctor first
- Agree on house rules before the dog arrives
Allergies are one of the most common reasons dogs are given up after adoption, which is hard on the dog. Please do not skip this step. At Baebaepuppy you can visit and spend time with the puppies before deciding.
Reducing symptoms at home
| Measure | Why |
|---|---|
| Keep the dog out of the bedroom | Less exposure during the hours you sleep |
| HEPA air purifier | Removes airborne allergen particles |
| Frequent cleaning and washing | Removes allergen built up on sofas, curtains and bedding |
| Non-allergic family member brushes | Removes loose hair and dander before it spreads |
| Wash hands after petting | Stops transfer to eyes and nose |
| Bath every 2–4 weeks | Reduces allergen on skin and coat (too often dries the skin) |
Coat and skin as health signals
| What you see | Possible cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Dull, brittle coat | Nutrition, dry skin | Review food, moisturize |
| Round patches of hair loss | Fungal skin infection, among others | Vet visit |
| Constant scratching or licking | Allergy, parasites | Vet visit, check parasite prevention |
| Lots of flakes | Dry skin, over-bathing, skin disease | Adjust bath interval, vet |
| Red skin under the coat | Damp skin under mats | Brush, dry fully, vet |
In a low-shedding breed, shedding that is unusual for your dog is itself a health signal. Check the skin as you brush.
Choosing brushes
| Tool | Use | Choose |
|---|---|---|
| Slicker brush | Surface brushing, small tangles | Soft, flexible pins |
| Comb | Checking for tangles, finishing | Fine and wide teeth on one comb |
| Pin brush | Long coat | Rounded pin tips |
| Detangling spray | Slip before brushing | Dog-specific, mild scent |
A slicker and a comb are enough to start. If the comb glides to the skin after the slicker, you are done. Brush gently with short strokes rather than scraping the skin.
Common myths
- No shedding means no cleaning → Dander and fine hair still build up.
- Fine as a puppy means fine forever → Reactions can change during the coat change or adulthood.
- A short shave prevents allergies → Saliva and dander are the cause, so coat length makes little difference.
Frequently asked questions
How does it compare with Bichons and Maltese?
All three are low-shedding; the coat texture and care differ. See Coton vs Bichon vs Maltese.
Will bathing more often help allergies?
Every 2–4 weeks is about right. Bathing too often dries the skin and can increase dander.
