Coton de Tuléar Meaning, History and Coat Colors: The Royal Dog of Madagascar and How Puppy Markings Change

Knowing the Coton de Tuléar meaning explains a lot about the breed's look and history. The name carries the texture of its coat, its home town and its long history as a companion. This guide covers the meaning and history, spelling and pronunciation, and a question many owners ask: how coat color and puppy markings change.

In short"Coton de Tuléar" is French for "cotton of Tuléar." Tuléar is a port city in south-west Madagascar, now called Toliara, and the breed is known as the "Royal Dog of Madagascar." In English it is usually written Coton de Tulear. The standard color is white, and the brown or black markings some puppies are born with usually fade as they grow.

Literally "the cotton dog from Tuléar." In Korea it is written in several ways and often shortened to "꼬똥"; they are all the same breed.

History: small dogs from across the sea, then a royal companion

There are few written records. The most widely told story is that small bichon-type dogs travelling on ships in the Indian Ocean in the 16th–17th centuries settled in Madagascar and developed into today's breed over time. That is why the Coton is considered a distant relative of the Bichon Frise, Maltese, Bolognese and Havanese.

The nobility of the Merina kingdom are said to have treasured these small white dogs, giving rise to the nickname "Royal Dog of Madagascar." The breed became known in Europe from the mid-20th century, is recognized by the FCI in Group 9 (bichon type), and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2014.

Coat color: white standard, puppy markings that fade

The FCI standard calls for a white base coat; light grey or lemon (pale tan) shading on the ears is allowed. Kennel clubs differ slightly on what markings they accept.

Some puppies are born with brown, grey or, less often, black markings on the ears or body. These usually fade as the puppy grows, and many adults look almost completely white. How much a puppy will fade varies, so the best guide is the parents' adult coats.

Party-color Cotons

Some puppies are born white with black and brown patches, often called "party color." At Baebaepuppy, roughly 30% of families who contact us specifically ask for a puppy with markings like these. Markings often fade a lot with age, so do not expect bold puppy patches to stay the same into adulthood. If you want a marked puppy, look at the parents' adult coats and ask how the color is likely to change.

Living up to the name

One family who adopted from us sent photos after grooming and said their dog "really became a ball of cotton, just like its name." After a bath and a full blow-dry, the coat puffs up and feels light and soft to hold.

What the name tells you about care

Like cotton, the coat is light and soft but tangles easily. Coming from a warm port, the breed generally prefers mild conditions to severe cold, and white coat and skin should not be left in strong sun for long. See our temperament guide and grooming guide.

Frequently asked questions

If black markings stay, is it not a Coton?

Markings alone cannot confirm a breed. Check pedigree papers and the parents. Kennel clubs also differ on accepted markings.

What is it called in Chinese?

It is often called 棉花面纱犬, a name that highlights the cotton-like coat.
