Coton de Tuléar vs Bichon Frise vs Maltese: Coat, Size, Temperament and Care Compared
They are all small white dogs, so many people mix them up. The three breeds are distant bichon-type relatives, but they differ clearly in coat texture, care, build and temperament. This Coton de Tulear vs Bichon (and Maltese) comparison puts it all side by side, including how to tell them apart as puppies.

Coat differences mean care differences
Coton
Fine hair grows continuously. Shed hair stays in the coat and tangles, so brushing is the key, and keeping it short makes care much easier.
Bichon Frise
The dense curls need regular scissoring to keep the classic round shape. Springy curls hold volume, but tangles become tight quickly.
Maltese
The straight coat tangles less, but a long coat needs daily brushing and attention to face hair and tear stains.
Temperament differences
All three are companion breeds that love people, with different flavors. The Coton follows its people around and clowns; the Bichon stands out for approaching everyone; the Maltese is affectionate but often more sensitive to noise and new situations. Still, parents, upbringing and socialization matter more than breed.
A common misunderstanding
In consultations we sometimes hear, "Another seller told me this puppy is not a Coton but mixed with Bichon." Puppies of these breeds really do look alike. A breed cannot be judged from one puppy photo; you need the parents, pedigree information and adult photos of earlier puppies from the same parents. At Baebaepuppy you can meet the puppies in person and decide after spending time with them.
How they look as adults
| Compare | Coton de Tuléar | Bichon Frise | Maltese |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coat in your hand | Light and soft like cotton | Springy and curly | Smooth and flowing |
| Long coat shape | Slight wave, falls fully | Puffs up into a round shape | Falls straight |
| Tail on the move | Curls over the back | Curls over the back | Carried over the back |
| Face | Round eyes, soft expression | Round head silhouette | Small, fine face |
Telling them apart as puppies
At 2–3 months all three are small and white, and the adult coat has not come in yet. The surest way:
- See the parents in person or on video (adult coat and build)
- Check pedigree papers and parent information
- Ask for adult photos of earlier puppies from the same parents
- Meet the puppy and decide after spending time together

Weekly care time (typical)
| Care | Coton | Bichon | Maltese |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brushing | 3–4 times a week | 3–4 times a week | 2–4 times a week (depends on length) |
| Full groom | Every 4–8 weeks | Every 4–6 weeks | Every 6–8 weeks |
| Eye care | Daily | Daily | Daily |
| Coat-change burden | High (8–14 months) | Medium | Lower |
Care time depends on coat length and style. A short trim reduces the work for all three.
Tear stain care for all three
- Wipe and dry the eye area once a day
- Trim hair near the eyes or tie a top-knot
- Wash the water bowl daily and change water often
- If tearing increases suddenly or the eyes are red, see a vet first
Which suits your home?
| Your situation | Consider |
|---|---|
| First dog | Any of the three; the Coton is easy with a short coat |
| Children at home | Coton and Bichon are a little sturdier; take extra care with a Maltese |
| Tight grooming budget | Bichons need frequent shaping; Coton and Maltese can be kept short |
| Want a long coat | Only if you can brush daily |
| Long hours alone | Individual temperament and practice matter more than breed |
Questions before you choose
- Can you spend 10 minutes a day, an hour a week, on coat care?
- Can you visit a groomer every 4–8 weeks?
- Are you ready for a companion of about 15 years?
